The first mountain railway in Europe built through high alpine terrain, and still a UNESCO World Heritage site. The line crosses sixteen viaducts and fifteen tunnels; the viewing points along the old imperial road look straight onto them. Close to Vienna, so it works as a half-day if you prefer — and a good option in weather that would spoil a longer drive.
