The heart of the Salzkammergut, and quieter than Hallstatt. The village of St. Wolfgang sits on the lake with the White Horse Inn on its shore; from there a cog railway climbs the Schafberg for a view over a dozen lakes at once. St. Gilgen on the western shore makes an easy second stop. Often combined with Salzburg, which lies half an hour further on.
